During the months of the lockdown, teachers had to deal with different means and ways of teaching from their usual practices. How did it go? Did distance learning effectively replace face-to-face teaching? Has the response been similar in all levels and grades of school and in the different territories of the country? In the paper, after some reflections on how to rethink education in the post-pandemic period and an examination of the actions implemented by the Italian Ministry of Education for a school transition towards innovative teaching, we present the results of a national research promoted by the Italian Society of Research and Didactics in collaboration with some associations of teachers who have tried to answer the questions mentioned above.
