We outline the genetic diversity and evolution of circulating strains. The paper details the array of clinical signs and pathologies observed in infected birds. Most advanced laboratory diagnostic methods, including molecular techniques, are reviewed for their role in rapid and accurate detection, forming the cornerstone of effective surveillance programs. Furthermore, we explore the advancements in WRV vaccine development, covering traditional as well as promising novel approaches. The ongoing challenge of managing WRV infections necessitates integrated surveillance-control programs, prioritizing enhanced diagnostic capabilities and the development of more efficacious and broadly protective vaccines to safeguard populations of domestic ducks and geese.
