Abstract The communicative strategy of Aelian’s work is outlined through survey of the play between the external author with his readers (the audience), and the internal authors with respective readers. Aelian, the external pepaideu- menos author, addresses a likewise learned audience of pepaideumenoi, producing letters as written by one main type of fictional characters (ethe) - farmers - with a far lesser degree of paideia.
