The paper promotes broader reflection on the educational use of Sharon Macdonald’s (2009) ideas on “difficult heritage”, understood as public material and immaterial heritage that is difficult to manage because it conveys ideologies that are no longer acceptable today but cannot be destroyed precisely because it constitutes historical heritage. The contribution argues that a new approach to history education, based on the involvement of public history education, game-based learning and the re-evaluation of the educational role of museums, could help to overcome the conflictual state of public memory inherent in the narrative of colonialism.

Abstract
The paper promotes broader reflection on the educational use of Sharon Macdonald’s (2009) ideas on “difficult heritage”, understood as public material and immaterial heritage that is difficult to manage because it conveys ideologies that are no longer acceptable today but cannot be destroyed precisely because it constitutes historical heritage. The contribution argues that a new approach to history education, based on the involvement of public history education, game-based learning and the re-evaluation of the educational role of museums, could help to overcome the conflictual state of public memory inherent in the narrative of colonialism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
