The contribution presents the preliminary outcomes of a newly initiated study on the density and articulation of the settlement fabric and the connected system of urban and rural fortifications defined in medieval central Puglia. It focuses on Castel del Monte – a UNESCO heritage site since 1996 – and is supported by a robust ancient road network that has assumed a clear morphogenetic capacity of the historical landscapes in the entire Southeastern Italy region. This network traces back to the designed routes of the Appian and Trajan’s Ways, the first ‘highway’ system in Euro-Mediterranean history, a resilient prototype of engineering audacity and cultural survival. These attributes have prompted its nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 2024.

Abstract
These attributes have prompted its nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 2024.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
