A coastal bivalve community, historically exploited by dredging in the southern Adriatic Sea, was investigated to monitor its status after three years of fishing stop. Sampling was carried out in two areas off Varano during July 2017. A depleted community was found, probably affected by an environmental stress acting in the area besides the fishing pressure. However, the slight differences observed between the two investigated areas are likely related to the occasional hydraulic dredging carried out to test the striped clam abundance in order to evaluate the possibility to restart the exploitation.

Abstract

A coastal bivalve community, historically exploited by dredging in the southern Adriatic Sea, was investigated to monitor its status after three years of fishing stop. Sampling was carried out in two areas off Varano during July 2017. A depleted community was found, probably affected by an environmental stress acting in the area besides the fishing pressure. However, the slight differences observed between the two investigated areas are likely related to the occasional hydraulic dredging carried out to test the striped clam abundance in order to evaluate the possibility to restart the exploitation.
