Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) non-O157 serogroup are nowdays among the most important emerging group of foodborne pathogens. In particular, the serogroup O26 could cause a large spectrum of illness in humans. In this study 250 minced beef samples, collected at retail level, were tested for the presence of E. coli O26. Three minced beef samples (1.2%) tested positive for E. coli O26, and among these, two were contamined with multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains. The presence of E. colt O26 strains in minced beef points to the need for proper hygiene during meat production to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses and transmission of MDR organisms via foods to humans.

Abstract
Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) non-O157 serogroup are nowdays among the most important emerging group of foodborne pathogens. In particular, the serogroup O26 could cause a large spectrum of illness in humans. In this study 250 minced beef samples, collected at retail level, were tested for the presence of E. coli O26. Three minced beef samples (1.2%) tested positive for E. coli O26, and among these, two were contamined with multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains. The presence of E. colt O26 strains in minced beef points to the need for proper hygiene during meat production to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses and transmission of MDR organisms via foods to humans.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
