The council is a space in which scenarios of crisis of that particular organisational system called Ecclesia can manifest themselves. It can be a theatre in which antagonisms capable of questioning the organisational mechanisms of the institution are staged, and in which the leadership that governs it can activate processes of anti-antagonism capable of keeping it in equilibrium without the crisis leading to regression or, ad- rectly, to the death of the system itself. Starting from the analysis of the pontificate of Paschal II - in particular the dramatic years after 1111 - the paper intends to analyse how the pontiff and his closest entourage were able to deal with antagonisms and how the council represented a space in which to give meaning to the crisis and imagine answers to overcome it.
