The feeding habits of three demersal fish species, Conger conger (Linnaeus 1758), Helicolenus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809) and Pagellus bogaraveo (Brunnich, 1768) on the muddy bottoms of the northwestern Ionian Sea were examined through the analysis of their stomach contents, evaluating possible overlaps between their diets with two indices. The trophic spectrum between C. conger and H. dactylopterus showed significant similarities, while negligible niche overlap were found between the diet of C. conger and P. bogaraveo, and that of H. dactylopterus and P. bogaraveo.

Stomach content analysis explains the functioning of the marine food web and gives a contribution to biodiversity knowledge

Abstract

The feeding habits of three demersal fish species, Conger conger (Linnaeus 1758), Helicolenus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809) and Pagellus bogaraveo (Brunnich, 1768) on the muddy bottoms of the northwestern Ionian Sea were examined through the analysis of their stomach contents, evaluating possible overlaps between their diets with two indices. The trophic spectrum between C. conger and H. dactylopterus showed significant similarities, while negligible niche overlap were found between the diet of C. conger and P. bogaraveo, and that of H. dactylopterus and P. bogaraveo.
