The occurrence of sperm whale in the Gulf of Taranto was updated using data collected from 2016 to 2017 during standardized vessel-based surveys. The occurrence of 7 sightings for a total of 27 specimens was recorded in the northernmost Taranto Valley canyon system in a depth range from 900 to 1130 m. These results contributed to update the knowledge on the spatial distribution of P. macrocephalus in the central-eastern Mediterranean Sea. The need of conservation measures for the protection of the species in the area was discussed.
