The essay intends to investigate the assimilation process by the medieval papacy of languages and rituals that convey an imperial identity of its power. The study will analyse the chronological period between the 11th and 13th centuries. First, it will be consid- ered the symbol plenitudo potestatis, which from the 11th century onwards was subject to a widening of its semantic spectrum. Then we will analyse the rituals of the advent of a pope, which incorporated and transformed the Byzantine imperial model, that appear fundamental to understanding the evolution of the papacy power in the period considered. This theoretical framework supported the papacy’s struggle for prestige and precedence over all other secular institutions, including the imperial one. It also transformed the jurisdictional power of the Apostolic See according to a universal dimension.
