This article describes cities that have fractal features, including the city of Petra in Jordan and several cities in southern Italy, such as Matera, Massafra and Pietragalla. Such cities can either be perched on a hilltop or excavated into a hill or gorge. The setting and materials determine urban and artistic features that can be described in mathematical terms.
