Abstract

Useful background informations about the development and the revision processes of the communication system through images by the early Christian communities could be provided from the analysis of burial places and spaces with the most ancient decorations of Christian patronage, dating back to the first decades of the third century, integrated with the study of the distribution of pictures in their monumental contexts and with the investigation of the motivations behind the selection of specific images. The figurative repertory, examined through examples from underground cemeteries of Rome, documents the continuity of traditional forms from artistic culture of the Hellenistic-Roman period, but also the development of a new iconographic language, based on the transposition in images of the texts of Scriptures, with a specific identitary function. The oldest evidences, preserved in the original areas of the catacombs, are an extremely significant documentation, as they return the first formulations of an iconographic dossier that will remain essentially unchanged over the following centuries: arises, therefore, the basis for the formalization of a collective 'imaginary'.
