In Aristophanes’ Plutus, produced in 388 B.C., the rôle, the mask and the costume of the character of Ploutos, the personification of wealth, have a significant importance. The aim of this paper is to draw a complete profile of the characterization and the presence of Wealth throughout the drama, not only in the prologue scene, by studying the changes that occur in his persona after he is healed of his blindness. For this purpose, it is also useful a detailed analysis of vv. 634-636 and their scholia (which notice a parody of Sophocles’ Phineus, and debate on the meaning of the verb ἐξομματόω), usually neglected by modern scholars.
