Summary Radial glia (RG) of the human foetal telencephalon were analysed at midgestation by immunofluorescence confocal microscopy. The RG were characterized by nestin, GFAP, and connexin 43 (Cx43) reactivity. At the beginning of cerebral cortex development, Cx43 expression is observed in RG cells of all the telencephalic layers, whereas at the end of corticogenesis, Cx43 expression appears restricted to the subcortical and cortical plates. The results demonstrate that in RG, Cx43 is developmentally regulated and becomes layer-specific at the end of corticogenesis, suggesting a role of junctional communication in cell migration, cortex temporary connectivity, and synaptogenesis.
