Exercise results in an increase in plasma cortisol. The 6 days per week training of a Standardbred Trotter is broken into 4 jog days and 2 "fast" days; so the horses were being prepared for a race every 10-15 days. In the present work the effect of different kinds of training (basic, sprint and race) on cortisol, glucose, RBC, PCV, HGB, MCH, MCV, MCHC, PLT, WBC, heart rate, respiratory rate and rectal temperature were studied. All exercise produce an increase of cortisol (p < 0.01) and two hours after race the cortisol concentration is still greater than the rest value. The peck of cortisol concentration results in an significant increase of glucose and leucocytes (p < 0.01). A good training program must consider the normal circadian rhythm of cortisol secretion, because elevated hormonal concentration can cause stress disease and overtraining syndrome.
