This paper presents a methodology and an experience for building group-adaptive systems. To test our approach, we developed a system, called GAIN (Group Adapted Interaction for News), able to provide background information and news adapted to group of users in a public environment. Starting from different hypotheses on the different knowledge level of the group members, the proposed system has been developed using initially a group model that has been built from a preliminary user study based on a statistical approach. Next, on the base of the hypothesis that the system has access to the user profile of some group members, the environment sets up the model of the group interests mixing individual preferences with a probabilistic prevision of unknown group members.
