A procedure based on a version of the Erlangen programme is used to construct the absolute Minkowski space-time of special relativity and the Newtonian space-time starting from groupoids of transformations. The pas- sage from special relativity to Newtonian geometry is performed at the level of groupoids. A frame independent Lagrangian (and Hamiltonian) formulation of dynamics is formulated.

Abstract
