The aim of this work is to investigate the management of standardbred trotter in Apulia region. One hundred horses were examined: age, sex, withers height, chest measurement (to calculate body weight according to M. Rosset, 1990), Body Condition Score (BCS), training, diet, shoeing, kind of stable and record were registered. The mean of the age is 4,46 2,28 years and correspond to the race-age. The 70% of horses received commercial food and also stay in paddock. The BCS was positively related with training and diet The record is related with the age, but not with the management, probably because genetic influences strongly affect performances. On the basis of our results, we think that the management and training of standardbred trotters in Apulia can be improved, because only few trotters are fed, trained and reared according to modem management techniques, aimed at optimising their athletic performances.
