Self-fruitful Apulian almonds 'Falsa barese','Genco', 'Scorza Verde' and 'Tuono' and self-unfruitful 'Cristomorto', 'Ferragnes', 'Mission' and 'Nonpareil' were budded in the nursery in September 1980 onto peach x almond hybrid GF 677, sweet almond seedling cv. 'Don Carlo' and homozygotic peach seedling GF 305. The orchard was established at Valenzano, near Bari (Southern Italy) in December 1981. By 1992, 62.5% of the trees grafted onto peach seedlings had died. GF 677 and almond seedlings proved to be the more vigorous rootstocks compared to GF 305. The 'Mission', 'Nonpareil' and 'Ferragnes' cultivars had significantly greater vegetative growth than the others. From 1984 to 1992, GF 305 induced a significantly lower average annual kernel yield than did almond or GF 677. Considering the whole 1984-1994 period, no differences in cumulative kernel yield were found between the trees budded onto GF 677 and almond. Consistent yields were produced by the self-fruitful 'Genco', 'Scorza verde' and 'Tuono' cultivars, in contrast to 'Nonpareil' which proved absolutely unsatisfactory under the environmental conditions of the trial. The average kernel yield of the self-fruitful almonds was 185% that of the self-unfruitful almonds. The self-fruitfulness of Apulian almonds proved to be a trait of great importance for productivity.
