CO2 is one of the gases responsible for the enhancement of the greenhouse effect. Several strategies were proposed for cutting down the emission of CO2. One of them is the recovery and utilization of CO2. It appears of interest to develop new CO2 based synthetic procedures of fine and bulk chemicals if CO2 is used as the starting material in place of toxic or more expensive materials presently used. An attractive utilization of CO2 is as H carrier, or as a C source for the synthesis of fuels. The utilization of solar energy is a must in this case. It might be used for driving thermal, electrochem. or photoelectrochem. reactions. All reactions aimed to use CO2 need a catalyst for the activation and fixation of the cumulene: transition metal systems are good candidates for this role since they were used as chemical, electrochemical, photochemical, photoelectrochemical catalysts in a number of reactions. The extension of the use of CO2 from the actual level to that considered as appropriate for the utilization of CO2 to become an operative strategy for the control of its level into the atmosphere requires a medium- to long-term program and a great investment, both in terms of funds and of intellectual efforts, for developing new catalysts having a higher turnover number and higher selectivity, new materials and new technologies.

Abstract
The extension of the use of CO2 from the actual level to that considered as appropriate for the utilization of CO2 to become an operative strategy for the control of its level into the atmosphere requires a medium- to long-term program and a great investment, both in terms of funds and of intellectual efforts, for developing new catalysts having a higher turnover number and higher selectivity, new materials and new technologies.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
