The influential Alberto Asor Rosa said “Italy is not the country of the novel” which made its appearance in Italy in the 18th century, first merely as imported product and then as emulation of European novel, english in particular. This book analyzes the rise of the novel in Italy from the initial phase of dissemination of translated English novels (traslations generally made through intermediate Fench versions) to the production of “derivatives” novels that is to say original novels, new in their structure but genetically descendants from the English models relative to themes, narrative rules and its functions and social roles.

Abstract
