Spermatozoa-epithelial celi adhesion in thè isthmic oviduct may be important in sperm storage and regulation of capacitation for the mare (Dobrinski I. et al., Am. J. Vet. Res. 57, 1996). Sialicacids occupy thè terminal position of the oligosaccharide chains of glycoconjugates thus to be important in the cell-cell interactions. In this study we investigated the sialyloligosaccharide expression in thè isthmic epithelium of filly, estrus, and pregnant mares. Tissues were fixed in 4% (w/v) neutral formaKn and embedded in Paraplast. In hydrated sections, sialyloligosaccharide sequences were detected direcdy with MAA and SNA, and with PNA, DBA, SBA, RCA-I, after sialidase (s) treatment. The luminal surface of the epithelium of ali specìmens was positive to SNA and s-DBA. In addition, cilia reacted with s-SBA during estrus as well as with MAA and s-RCA-I both in filly and pregnant mares. The luminal surface of nonciliated cells (NCs) of all specimens reacted also with MAA and s-SBA, while showed additional staining with s-RCA-I in filly and K-s-PNA in pregnancy. The cytoplasm of NCs was stained with s-DBA in estrus and also with s-RCA-I in pregnancy. Slender NCs were selectively marked with SNA and s-SBA in filly and in mare during the estrus. The differences in the epithelial sialyloligosaccharides of the horse isthmic oviduct may be related to changes in the functions of this tract.
