The article investigates some typical aspects of the pilgrimage to the sanctuary of St. Felix promoted by Paulinus Nolanus in Cimitile/Nola. The area was a marginal one in ancient Christianity, and was located at a certain distance from the most important towns. For this reason, the pilgrimage promoted by Paulinus can be called "rural" pilgrimage; morevoer, it is characterized by some rural and semi-pagan practices, such as the animal sacrifice.
