In 1541, the spanish writer and editor Blasco de Garay published the Cartas en refranes, a curious text that combined reminiscences of the medieval sentimental novel with the new ideas of the erasmian spirituality. Among the peculiar features of the text, which has the form of a short epistolary interchange between a woman and her lover, there is the eccentric style of the former’s letter: this is, in effect, a collection of proverbs. The analysis of the rhetorical structure of the the two epistles and of the relations between the woman paremiologycal writing and the elevated style of the man’s one, throws light on the complex function that proverbs play in the text, where they are part of a subtle communicative strategy which, behind an ingenious expedient, conceals profound reflection on topical spiritual questions on the eve of the Council of Trent.

Abstract
In 1541, the spanish writer and editor Blasco de Garay published the Cartas en refranes, a curious text that combined reminiscences of the medieval sentimental novel with the new ideas of the erasmian spirituality. Among the peculiar features of the text, which has the form of a short epistolary interchange between a woman and her lover, there is the eccentric style of the former’s letter: this is, in effect, a collection of proverbs. The analysis of the rhetorical structure of the the two epistles and of the relations between the woman paremiologycal writing and the elevated style of the man’s one, throws light on the complex function that proverbs play in the text, where they are part of a subtle communicative strategy which, behind an ingenious expedient, conceals profound reflection on topical spiritual questions on the eve of the Council of Trent.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
