History of the shrine of St. Nicholas of Bari from the translation of the relics of the Saint from Myra to Bari in 1087 to the present day. Particular attention has been paid to the role of the shrine in city life, local traditions and the international pilgrimage phenomenon related to it. The presentation of the Sanctuary of San Nicola involves an introduction reporting its dedication (including the possible transformations of the dedication itself), its geographical location and its ecclesiastical administration. The text deals with the history of the sanctuary; The textual sources related to the Sanctuary are also reported, as well as the secondary literature (bibliography). The presentation is enriched by an iconographical apparatus, reproducing ex-votos, cultual objects, artistic and archeological objects, architectural features.
Il contributo indaga la storia della basilica santuario di San Nicola dall'epoca della traslazione delle reliquie del Santo da Myra a Bari (1087) ai giorni nostri. Particolare attenzione è dedicata al ruolo del santuario nella costruzione dell'identità cittadina, alle tradizioni locali e alla dimensione internazionale del pellegrinaggio. Il culto del Santo, già presente a Bari nell'XI secolo, fu fortemente "sponsorizzato" dai Normanni, nuovi signori della Città, che ne fecero un efficace instrumentum regni per conmpattare la compagine cittadina ed affermare la propria supremazia sui Bizantini. Il contributo è arricchito da un apparato iconografico: ex voto, reliquiari, paramenti sacri, oggetti di culto, sculture ed opere d'arte.
