Abstract

The book is a collection of three essays dedicated to fantastic onomastics and toponymy present in Italian literature and cinematography (movies and cartoons) dedicated to childhood and early adolescence. The analysis, targeted in all cases to the identification of mechanisms used to coin new words underlying the creation of fairy names and fairy toponyms and to the translating techniques, has identified many common dynamics like transparency between name and referent, recourse to the mythology, history and literature, to ethnic verisimilitude and to phonetic-symbolism, to the frequent use of words belonging to foreign language assets (primarily English) or the allusion to “high” cognitive fields (such as chemistry, astronomy, botany); in many cases the result is deletion of mechanism of transparency/allusion due to limited knowledge of the target audience to which the products are dedicated. The first two contributions, In the name of the Winx. Map of the characters and places of the Magic Universe (Nel nome delle Winx. Mappa dei personaggi e dei luoghi dell’Universo Magico) and Bewitched names and fairy names in the magical world of Fairy Oak (Nomi stregati e nomi fatati nel magico mondo di Fairy Oak), are focused on the Italian originals and their translation abroad, the last instead Trilli & Co. The names of magical characters and enchanted places in the filmography of animation (Trilli & Co. I nomi dei personaggi magici e dei luoghi incantati nella filmografia d’animazione), on the contrary, analyzes the names present in the Italian versions of the films of U.S. production highlighting both cases of conservation or literal translation and cases where it has been applied a new strategy of coinage of new words.
