The history of Jung’s influence on the psychoanalytic movement is, in many respects, complex and controversial. According to the interpretation of history offered by the mainstream psychoanalytical movement, after Jung broke away from Freud’s psychoanalytic school and founded Analytic Psychology, the two schools took entirely different paths. However, the thesis of a radical divergence between the two movements is both factually and historically misleading. In fact, this paper tries to show that some of the most important transformations of psychoanalytic thought can be related to theoretical concepts originally proposed by Jung. In many cases, even when it is either not known or not acknowledged, current psychoanalytic theory and practice could be considered more akin to the Jungian than the Freudian conception.
