The small number of boats and sailors that, in the first half of XIX century, were present on the coast of Abruzzo, contributed to the idea, in contemporary historiography, that the sea was not exploited in this territory as would be suitable in an area with so much extended coast. This historical analysis dwells upon the reasons of the unsuccessful development of the local fishing industry, considering all the factors that conditioned its activity: the competition of neighbouring fishing communities, the coast’s adverse physical conditions, the backwardness and poverty of the fishermen and the negative effects of certain fishing laws enforced in this historical period.

Abstract
The small number of boats and sailors that, in the first half of XIX century, were present on the coast of Abruzzo, contributed to the idea, in contemporary historiography, that the sea was not exploited in this territory as would be suitable in an area with so much extended coast. This historical analysis dwells upon the reasons of the unsuccessful development of the local fishing industry, considering all the factors that conditioned its activity: the competition of neighbouring fishing communities, the coast’s adverse physical conditions, the backwardness and poverty of the fishermen and the negative effects of certain fishing laws enforced in this historical period.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
