The book examines the ‘civitates’ of Apulia et Calabria: their institutions, the possible extension of their territory, the consistency of the epigraphic heritage in order to outline the ancient society of local communities. The Onomasticon of ‘gentilicia’ documented in ‘municipia’ and ‘coloniae’, representatives of the higher orders take place in history under construction of ancient cities. The link between social status and form of the name makes it possible that the name asset can be explored as an archive. An appendix consisting 39 inscriptions, almost all unpublished, closes the volume.
