François Feuardent (Coutances 1541- Bayeux 1610), Franciscan, is known for having composed several erudite works, theological treatises, biblical commentaries and writings against the Calvinists. Among his works there is the "Histoire de la fondation de l’église et abbaïe du Mont S. Michel, près celui de Tombe, et des miracles, reliques, et indulgences donnez en icelle, tout recueilli des archives dudit lieuv", published in Coutances in 1604 (J. Le Cartel). As Feuardent declares in the title of the History, he is interested in the story of the foundation of the Michaelic sanctuary on the mount Tumba, but also in the relics, in the miracles and the indulgences: the author wants to point out the aspects of the popular devotion, that could interest more the devotees and the pilgrims. Few years later, Feuardent’s History was translated from French to Italian and was published in Naples in 1620 by the publisher Ottavio Beltrano. Place and date of publication are “From Sant’Angelo in mount Gargano, October the 1st 1620”. The translation contains, however, some additions to Feuardent’s History: there are, in fact, other three miracles that – as it declares – come from “Authori gravi, e degni di fede” in order to rise in the readers the “divotione, e riverenza verso l’Archangelo S. Michele”.

Abstract

Michele”.
