This article analyses, from a predominantly diachronic perspective, Alberto Petrucciani’s scholarly output focusing on cataloguing theory, catalogues and search systems. Through an examination of monographs, essays, articles (including those published online and on blogs) and his role as a speaker at REICAT (2009), the essay maps out and periodises the evolution of the scholar’s thinking. The analysis identifies six broad thematic areas: from descriptive and semantic cataloguing to the use and evaluation of electronic catalogues, from subject indexing to the study of rare books and authors’ libraries. What emerges as Petrucciani’s methodological cornerstone is the centrality of the description of the individual item, whether in the case of ancient or modern heritage. Finally, the article highlights the scholar’s ongoing critical reflection on contemporary conceptual models and integrated search systems, reaffirming the anti-formalist function of cataloguing codes and the librarian’s cultural responsibility to faithfully represent the publishing landscape for the benefit of the user.

Abstract
Finally, the article highlights the scholar’s ongoing critical reflection on contemporary conceptual models and integrated search systems, reaffirming the anti-formalist function of cataloguing codes and the librarian’s cultural responsibility to faithfully represent the publishing landscape for the benefit of the user.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
