The European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is a foundation species in Europe. It is highly valued for its ecological, economic, and cultural roles, but it is particularly vulnerable to climate change, especially in the southern edge of its distribution range in the Mediterranean region. Numerous studies have been conducted to address the challenges posed to forest management by climate change and by the need for biodiversity conservation. These studies have focused on forestry practices aimed at improving climate mitigation and adaptation and the sustainable provision of ecosystem services (as the three climate-smart forestry objectives) or on forestry practices aimed at the maintenance/enhancement of their biodiversity. Although climate-smart forestry and biodiversity-oriented management are frequently treated separately, the synergies and trade-offs between these objectives remain insufficiently explored. The aim of this dissertation is therefore to evaluate the effects of different forest management practices in a protected Mediterranean beech forest in relation to the objectives of Climate-Smart Forestry and biodiversity conservation, within the context of climate change. To do this, the dissertation has been structured in three parts. The first part is a systematic review identifying the drivers that most influence climate-smart forestry and biodiversity conservation objectives, with the purpose of identifying management strategies likely to achieve both objectives. Simulation models are powerful tools for evaluating the long-term effects of alternative management scenarios under changing climatic conditions. We selected LANDIS-II, a Forest Landscape Simulation Model, as it was appropriate for our objectives. The second part of this dissertation addresses the parametrization and calibration of LANDIS-II with a specific analysis about the model sensitivity analysis to different input data resolution on biomass projections. As an illustrative case study, a beech forest located in the Gargano National Park (Province of Foggia, Apulia Region, Southern Italy) was selected owing to its importance for biodiversity conservation. The study area in comprised in the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) IT9110004 “Foresta Umbra.” This site includes the Natura 2000 Habitat type 9210* (Apennine beech forests with Taxus and Ilex). In the third part of this dissertation, the impact of alternative forest management strategies (even-aged, uneven-aged and no intervention) on forest biodiversity (using tree species diversity and landscape patterns as a proxy) and carbon stocks, under two climate change scenarios (SSP 126 and 370) was evaluated. These simulations have enabled the evaluation of the synergies and trade-offs of different management measures in relation to the objectives of two approaches: climate-smart and biodiversity-oriented management. The results enhance our understanding of how management, biodiversity, and climate change may interact in Mediterranean beech forests, offering valuable insights for designing strategies that balance conservation and climate-smart goals. Moreover, the specific model calibration, one of the most time-consuming steps in implementing a forest landscape simulation model, for a Mediterranean beech forests is a valuable result in itself. This will allow the transferability of the approach to other similar forest landscapes as well as the replicability in the same one for further test variations on the (e.g. spatial) implementation of management measures or the effects of disturbances, such as wind, fire and insect outbreaks.
