This article examines the genesis and transformations of Régis Jauffret’s novel, first published in Italy under the title *1889. La nascita di Adolf Hitler* and later in France as *Dans le ventre de Klara*. Through an analysis of its successive versions, it shows how the change of title reflects a progressive interiorization of History: chronological and objective data give way to Klara’s body and consciousness, as she carries within her a future of which she remains unaware. The article thus explores the possibilities of the contemporary historical novel and highlights the ways in which fiction transforms an individual experience of violence into a universal representation of collective trauma. Writing cannot alter the past, but it can refuse to remain silent in the face of its irreversibility.
