The XVIII century has shown Europe, and then the Reign of Naples, as scenarios where have coexisted two elements that are theoretically incompatible: Enlightenment and slavery. This paper aims to examine in depth which has been the role of slavery during the 1700s in the mediterranean context of Southern Italy, as in the great constructions launched during the Bourbon kingdom, as in the way of thinking of the great jurists and intellectuals that have enliven the Neapolitan Enlightenment.
Il XVIII secolo ha visto l’Europa, e quindi il Regno di Napoli, come scenari in cui hanno coesistito due elementi teoricamente incompatibili: l’Illuminismo e la schiavitù. Il presente saggio intende approfondire quale sia stato nel Settecento il ruolo della schiavitù nel contesto mediterraneo del Mezzogiorno, sia nell’ambito delle grandi opere avviate durante la dominazione borbonica, sia nel pensiero dei grandi giuristi e intellettuali che hanno animato l’Illuminismo napoletano
