This approach aligns with the increasingly relevant ‘third mission’ activities of universities, through which cultural archives, special-interest libraries and the diverse collections that have accumulated within their library holdings are experiencing a new era of revitalisation. With the evolution of studies in the history of books and libraries, increasing attention is being paid to the cultural, economic and social context in which a collection, whether public or private, was formed, and to the reconstruction of the history and culture of the communities in question. Books and documents are also being studied as objects of use, alongside other books and documents, by specific individuals, in specific places, contexts and times. Research is increasingly focusing on services, and in particular on the public’s use of libraries, reconstructed through library archives, registers and readers’ testimonies. At the same time, cataloguing requires ever greater attention to the individual item, with its history, characteristics and specific features, including those relating to heritage; but equally to the item as a component of a collection in studies of private and institutional libraries. Information relating to the individual item is undoubtedly a field of primary interest to which catalogues must dedicate specific sections and pathways for description and consultation, in order to meet the need to bring to the attention of the public.

Abstract
Information relating to the individual item is undoubtedly a field of primary interest to which catalogues must dedicate specific sections and pathways for description and consultation, in order to meet the need to bring to the attention of the public.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
