The article focuses its attention on the international legislation of waste from ships and its proper delivery to collection centers in ports, as well as the possibilities for recovery and recycling in accordance to the most modern principles of the circular economy. Starting, then, from the defi nition of ship-generated waste and from an examination of the main requirements contained in MARPOL 73/78, with particular reference to the regime of exemptions and exceptions, the paper tries to imagine a path to modify the text of the Convention that could lead, on the one hand, to an absolute prohibition of the discharge of waste at sea and, on the other hand, to a totally ecological notion of the ship.
