Literary, papyrological, and epigraphic evidence indicates that the earliest model of book catalogues can be traced back to the Pinakes of Callimachus. The study of their fragments, together with other related sources, offers insight into the world of ancient books and libraries, shedding light on their cataloguing systems. These same sources also make it possible to explore more broadly the sphere of ancient libraries: their locations, cultural contexts, and the various actors involved – including scholars, intellectuals, ordinary readers, collectors and scribes.

Abstract
Literary, papyrological, and epigraphic evidence indicates that the earliest model of book catalogues can be traced back to the Pinakes of Callimachus. The study of their fragments, together with other related sources, offers insight into the world of ancient books and libraries, shedding light on their cataloguing systems. These same sources also make it possible to explore more broadly the sphere of ancient libraries: their locations, cultural contexts, and the various actors involved – including scholars, intellectuals, ordinary readers, collectors and scribes.File in questo prodotto:
