In this paper, I will try to illustrate how Ferruccio Rossi-Landi structures his “materialistic semiotics” by following certain assumptions of Karl Marx’s (1818-183) dialectical method. I will focus on the concept of “abstract determination” as developed by Galvano Della Volpe (1895-1968) and I will try to illustrate how Rossi-Landi uses this reading of the Marxian method to structure his model of “sign”. Furthermore, I will analyse the way in which Rossi-Landi criticises the assumptions of what he defines as “idealistic semiotics”. I will demonstrate that this criticism is coherent with Marx’s criticism of the Hegelian method. In line with certain critical interpretations of the Marxian reading of Hegel, I will attempt an evaluation of the extent to which Rossi-Landi’s semiotics is coherent with the foundations of Marx’s method.
