This essay explores ariosto’s use of the intellectual categories of wisdom and folly, with a particular focus on the Satires, the seven poems in “terza rima” (tercets) dating back to the years between 1517 and 1525. During this period, after which ariosto published the first edition of his Orlando Furioso, he strongly affirms, in opposition to the current values and the alleged and apparent wisdom of the world, his own individuality, the result of his following a tortuous path that led him ultimately to abandon common stereotypes in order to accept his “ragion pazza” (“mad reason”) as the only possible form of health.
