Systematic investigations conducted since 2016 by the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology (Vatican City), are allowing the detailed discovery of the underground settlements of the Lamapopoli cemetery complex in Canosa di Puglia (BT). These, intensively excavated in the rocky bank and coated of plaster, often painted, pose serious conservation problems. This situation has made it urgent to review the processes of archaeological investigation, to encourage the methodological integration between archaeology and conservation.
