Elderly migration present territorial differences and imbalances, that remain often hidden due to limitations of data availability at local levels. Our analyses are based on a unique collection of migration data and territorial variables covering at LAUs (Local Administrative Units) level (i.e., municipalities). The migration data comprises annual immigration and emigration flows by LAU from/to other LAUs in the country and from/to other countries. These flows are disaggregated by age, citizenship and cover Italy and Spain for the period 2011-2020.The study has two main objectives: 1) identifying municipalities in Italy and Spain which are experiencing particularly high-level migration of older people, as population groups in retirement ages (over 60 years old); 2) seeking to analyse the spatial factors which may explain these migration flows. We computed migration ratios among older people for the period here analysed for each municipality of Italy and Spain. Methods applied belong to Explorative Spatial Data Analysis and refer to local scale analysis. Choropleth maps are used to describe the spatial distribution of the different indicators. Results reveal that attractive areas for the elderly are characterised by higher availability of specific local social services and amenities.
