This contribution focuses on the relationship between Humanism and Scholasticism in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the first part, the author questions the interpretation, long shared by scholars, according to which the humanistic age marked a clear break with the past, thus forsaking the forms and contents of medieval scholastic thought. This view, according to the author, stems from a confusion between historical determinations (eras, periods, diachronic segments) and qualitative determinations (historiographical labels), which led to the complexity of Humanism being reduced to the sole ‘classicist’ dimension. The second part of this contribution, from a complementary point of view, highlights the persistence of scholastic philosophy in the humanistic age, emphasizing the blossoming of Renaissance Scotism and of the so-called ‘formalist scholasticism’.

Abstract
This contribution focuses on the relationship between Humanism and Scholasticism in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the first part, the author questions the interpretation, long shared by scholars, according to which the humanistic age marked a clear break with the past, thus forsaking the forms and contents of medieval scholastic thought. This view, according to the author, stems from a confusion between historical determinations (eras, periods, diachronic segments) and qualitative determinations (historiographical labels), which led to the complexity of Humanism being reduced to the sole ‘classicist’ dimension. The second part of this contribution, from a complementary point of view, highlights the persistence of scholastic philosophy in the humanistic age, emphasizing the blossoming of Renaissance Scotism and of the so-called ‘formalist scholasticism’.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
