Calvino described to us the gaze of an archaeologist, but he did not tell us about his adventure. Yet, if we dig well into his works, we will find a lot of fragments and finds. Because archaeology, it has been said, more than a discipline is a «mental form»: a way of seeing reality and outlining its contours, an attitude of imagining about the past and speculating on how it might have been. Imagination is one of the tools of the archaeologist: it serves to question, to search, to guess, and to tell what the past was like. Between invisible cities and very concrete excavation sites, Calvino saw the birth of scientific archaeology in Italy and continues to accompany it into the new millennium.

Abstract
Calvino described to us the gaze of an archaeologist, but he did not tell us about his adventure. Yet, if we dig well into his works, we will find a lot of fragments and finds. Because archaeology, it has been said, more than a discipline is a «mental form»: a way of seeing reality and outlining its contours, an attitude of imagining about the past and speculating on how it might have been. Imagination is one of the tools of the archaeologist: it serves to question, to search, to guess, and to tell what the past was like. Between invisible cities and very concrete excavation sites, Calvino saw the birth of scientific archaeology in Italy and continues to accompany it into the new millennium.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
