The aim of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of nihilism by reading some of the most important works of the Orleanian writer and philosopher Charles Péguy (1873-1914), whom more than one interpreter has compared, for different reasons, to Friedrich Nietzsche, but who – as Henri de Lubac wrote – «will save us from Nietzsche». Following Péguy’s reflections, it can be said that nihilism is not only the result of the devaluation of supreme values and the lack of a purpose or a meaning in life, but also and above all it depends on having a «ready-made thought» and a «habituated soul». In this regard, however, he not only denounces the crisis of his and our time, but also identifies two antidotes for us, represented by the thought of his mentor Henri Bergson and by the virtue of hope, which help us to find an agreement between our head and our heart, i.e., between the necessities of the intellect and the needs of the soul, and thus offer us a way to salvation.
