Il romanzo di formazione francese al femminile

Does the female educational novel exist? This thesis investigates this possibility in 19th and 20th century French fiction. Through a thematic path, developed from the analysis of novels chosen as representative of this sub-genre, a paradigm of female formation is outlined, highlighting the gap between the two centuries. In the 20th century, the emancipation of heroines from the enclosure of private and domestic spaces outlines the profile of modernity, which decisively shows a female face, embodying new historical assumptions. To the questions or constraints inherited from the 19th century, the romance novel finds new answers or ways forward. The realisation of the heroines no longer lies in the fixity of marriage (as it was in the 19th century novel), as the only social form to which they can be educated, but in the exploration of new open and provisional spaces

Esiste il romanzo di formazione al femminile? La tesi indaga questa possibilità nella narrativa francese del XIX e XX secolo. Attraverso un percorso tematico, sviluppato a partire dall’analisi di romanzi scelti come rappresentativi di questo sottogenere, viene delineato un paradigma di formazione femminile, mettendo in evidenza lo scarto tra i due secoli. Nel Novecento, l’emancipazione delle eroine dalla chiusura degli spazi privati e domestici delinea il profilo della modernità, che mostra decisamente un volto femminile, incarnando nuovi presupposti storici. Alle domande o ai vincoli ereditati dall’Ottocento, il romanzo di formazione trova nuove risposte o strade percorribili. La realizzazione delle eroine non risiede più nella fissità del matrimonio (come era nel romanzo ottocentesco), quale unica forma sociale alla quale essere educate, ma nell’esplorazione di nuovi spazi aperti e provvisori.
