The contribution aims to investigate the role of banks in the achievement of sustainability goals. Building on the analysis of the relevant legislation, as well as considering the function structurally performed by banks, the paper questions how the integration of ESG factors within the banking business can foster the realisation of sustainable projects and investments, limiting environmental risks and supporting initiatives capable of generating positive externalities. Moreover, analysing the specificities of "climate finance", it is questioned how public policies can incentivise the (private) financing of projects capable of producing positive externalities.

Abstract
The contribution aims to investigate the role of banks in the achievement of sustainability goals. Building on the analysis of the relevant legislation, as well as considering the function structurally performed by banks, the paper questions how the integration of ESG factors within the banking business can foster the realisation of sustainable projects and investments, limiting environmental risks and supporting initiatives capable of generating positive externalities. Moreover, analysing the specificities of "climate finance", it is questioned how public policies can incentivise the (private) financing of projects capable of producing positive externalities.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
