الترجمان وضميره: تأملات في شخصيات أدبية و سينمائية

I try to focus on the role and identity of the interpreter in the contemporary Arabic fiction and cinema of the Arab diaspora in Europe, in the context of urgent current social and political issues (Middle East conflicts and the phenomenon of clandestine migration to the West). I start from the narrative analysis of a character of alienated dragoman in a historical novel, Jirma at-turjuman, by Saudi Writer Muhammad Hasan ‘Alwan (2020), to pass to two Iraqi novels, set in the background of the American invasion of Iraq: al-Ḥafīda al-Amrīkiyya (2008) by Inaam Kajaji, and al-Mintaqa al-khadra’ (2009), by Shakir Nuri, discussing the intepreters’ betrayal of homeland. Just a brief insight into Bab al-khurūj (2012) by the Egyptian ‘Izz al-din Shukrī Fishir, and personal experiences as interpreter sheds light into the dilemma of “langue de bois” and dyglossia. The only short film Sawt al-Ākharin (2023) by French-Algerian director Fatima Kaci.
