Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is emerging as a foundational educational paradigm for higher education institutions within the framework of the 2030 Agenda. This article offers a theoretical–conceptual analysis of the importance of ESD in universities, examining the international scholarly literature and relevant theoretical frameworks. The analysis shows that integrating ESD into university systems addresses three main needs: the development of sustainability competences, the transformative role of universities in society, and the urgency of global environmental challenges. The study also identifies systemic benefits for institutions and implementation challenges, thereby contributing to the academic debate on a topic of growing relevance for higher education.
