Anti-glomerular basement membrane disease is a severe autoimmune disease caused by autoantibodies against epitopes on alpha 3 chains of type IV collagen, found in the alveolar and glomerular basement membrane. It presents with renal failure often requiring dialysis and/or pulmonary symptoms due to alveolar hemorrhage that may be life threatening when massive. Diagnosis rely on recognition of anti-GBM antibodies at tissue level (often kidneys) and/or in the blood. Treatment is based on plasma exchange in order to remove autoantibodies from circulation and on immunosuppressive agents in order to reduce antibodies production.
